The Honourable Herbert Arnold Dimitri
Oliver, QC came to Vancouver in 1952, becaming a leading trial and appellate
counsel. A member of the National Council of the Canadian Bar Association, and
for nine years a Governor of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, RW
Bro. Oliver was appointed a Judge of the Vancouver County Court, and then a
Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia from 1990 to 1996. From
1997-2007 he served as Conflict of Interest Commissioner for British Columbia.
From 2007 he had served as ethics advisor to the Vancouver Police Board. RW Bro.
“Bert” Oliver was Initiated into Western Gate Lodge No. 48, in 1958, later
serving as Worshipful Master for 1969-1970 and as District Deputy Grand Master
of District 15 for 1973- 1974. Serving on the Grand Lodge Committee on
Constitutions from 1972 until 1999, he was chairman from 1990 to 1999. He also
wrote the Trial Commission mandate and served as its first chairman for

"Serpents encircling rings and globes,
and issuing from globes, are common in the Persian, Egyptian, Chinese, and
Indian monuments. Vishnu is represented reposing on a coiled serpent, whose
folds form a canopy over him" (Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma, teachings of
the 25th Degree, Knight of the Brazen Serpent: 500). 
The serpent with its tail in its mouth
represents the life-giver. Manly P. Hall, 33-Degree Mason, says this in The
Secret Teachings of All Ages (Philosophical Research Society Press):
lxxxviii: "The serpent is the symbol and prototype of the Universal Savior, who
redeems the worlds by giving creation the knowledge of itself and the
realization of good and evil." 
"The Hermaphroditic figure is the
Symbol of the double nature anciently assigned to the Deity, as Generator and
Producer, as BRAHM and MAYA among the Aryans, Osiris and Isis among the
Egyptians. As the Sun was male, so the Moon was female; and Isis was both the
sister and the wife of Osiris. The Compass, therefore, is the Hermetic Symbol of
the Creative Deity, and the Square of the productive Earth or Universe" (Albert
Pike, Morals and Dogma: 851.
